- Professor Schmid began his scientific career at the Nuclear Research Centre Karlsruhe and earned his PhD at the University of Karlsruhe before joining Dornier System Ltd., a company that manufactures air and spacecraft as well as related machinery, as a project manager. He returned to academia in 1981 to head the Department of System Engineering at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg. In 1992 he returned to the University of Karlsruhe as Professor for the Sustainable Production of Electrical Energy. Three years later Professor Schmid joined the Institute for Solar Energy Technology (ISET) in Kassel, which conducts applied research in the areas of renewable energies, efficient use of energy and energy systems technology. At ISET, Schmid was both Professor for efficient energy conversion at the University of Kassel, and a member of the executive board, later becoming the board’s chairman. In 2009, ISET merged with the Fraunhofer Center for Wind Energy and Maritime Engineering (CWMT) to form the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IWES). Professor Schmid became Director of Fraunhofer IWES in Kassel, a post he still holds today. Beyond his work at IWES, Professor Schmid is a member of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). He was the founding President of the European Acadamy for Wind Energy and has been the chairman of several renowned international conferences including the 2nd World Conference and Exhibition on Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conversion in Vienna and the European Wind Energy Conference and Exhibition in Copenhagen.

- Karl Leo obtained the Diplomphysiker degree from the University of Freiburg in 1985, working with Adolf Goetzberger at the Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme. In 1988, he obtained the PhD degree from the University of Stuttgart for a PhD thesis performed at the Max-Planck-Institut für Festkörperforschung in Stuttgart under supervision of Hans Queisser. From 1989 to 1991, he was postdoc at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ, USA. From 1991 to 1993, he was with the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen, Germany. Since 1993, he is full professor of optoelectronics at the Technische Universität Dresden. In parallel, he is director of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Photonic Microsystems, Dresden. His main interest are novel semiconductor systems like semiconducting organic thin films; with special emphasis to understand basic device principles and the optical response. His work was recognized by the following awards: Otto-Hahn-Medaille (1989), Bennigsen-Förder-Preis (1991), Leibniz-Award (2002), award of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy (2002), and Manfred-von-Ardenne-Preis (2006). - Pablo joined Taylor Wessing in 2004 and is a member of the Corporate practice group in Berlin. He advises a broad range of domestic and international companies on various aspects of corporate law, including general corporate structuring and re-organisation, mergers and acquisitions as well as corporate governance. Pablo provides legal advice on complex and multi-jurisdictional M&A and Venture Capital transactions on a regular basis. His industry focus is on technology and new media companies. After completing his degree, he spent one year working as a business consultant for new media companies in Barcelona and Frankfurt. Pablo also holds an LL.M. from the University of the Western Cape in South Africa with a focus on international corporate and trade law. He wrote his LL.M. thesis on “The Societas Privata Europaea – A European Private Company in the Making”. Pablo is a member of the German Bar Association in Berlin.
