    • Professor Schmid began his scientific career at the Nuclear Research Centre Karlsruhe and earned his PhD at the University of Karlsruhe before joining Dornier System Ltd., a company that manufactures air and spacecraft as well as related machinery, as a project manager. He returned to academia in 1981 to head the Department of System Engineering at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg. In 1992 he returned to the University of Karlsruhe as Professor for the Sustainable Production of Electrical Energy. Three years later Professor Schmid joined the Institute for Solar Energy Technology (ISET) in Kassel, which conducts applied research in the areas of renewable energies, efficient use of energy and energy systems technology. At ISET, Schmid was both Professor for efficient energy conversion at the University of Kassel, and a member of the executive board, later becoming the board’s chairman. In 2009, ISET merged with the Fraunhofer Center for Wind Energy and Maritime Engineering (CWMT) to form the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IWES). Professor Schmid became Director of Fraunhofer IWES in Kassel, a post he still holds today. Beyond his work at IWES, Professor Schmid is a member of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). He was the founding President of the European Acadamy for Wind Energy and has been the chairman of several renowned international conferences including the 2nd World Conference and Exhibition on Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conversion in Vienna and the European Wind Energy Conference and Exhibition in Copenhagen.

    • Karl Leo obtained the Diplomphysiker degree from the University of Freiburg in 1985, working with Adolf Goetzberger at the Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme. In 1988, he obtained the PhD degree from the University of Stuttgart for a PhD thesis performed at the Max-Planck-Institut für Festkörperforschung in Stuttgart under supervision of Hans Queisser. From 1989 to 1991, he was postdoc at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ, USA. From 1991 to 1993, he was with the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen, Germany. Since 1993, he is full professor of optoelectronics at the Technische Universität Dresden. In parallel, he is director of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Photonic Microsystems, Dresden. His main interest are novel semiconductor systems like semiconducting organic thin films; with special emphasis to understand basic device principles and the optical response. His work was recognized by the following awards: Otto-Hahn-Medaille (1989), Bennigsen-Förder-Preis (1991), Leibniz-Award (2002), award of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy (2002), and Manfred-von-Ardenne-Preis (2006). He is co-founder of several companies, including Novaled AG and Heliatek GmbH.

    • Agnes von Matuschka leads together with Prof. Jan Kratzer the Center for Entrepreneurship at TU Berlin, where she is responsible for the whole process of supporting scientists to become entrepreneurs. She initiated, developed and launched the TU Gründungsservice and the pre-seed incubator TU-Gründungswerkstatt. Since 2010, TU Berlin joined the Climate-KIC project of the European Commission where specific measures to foster green startups will be implemented starting from grants to working space in the green house and networking activities. Previously, Agnes worked at the European Commission in the industrial policy department and then at TU Berlin within the Technology Transfer Office. She holds a diploma in Biology and has been participating in the Helmholtz Management Academy. Moreover, she is a founder of two social businesses.

    • Dr. Norbert Verweyen is Managing Director of RWE Effizienz GmbH, which was founded in July 2009. The company’s head office is located in Dortmund, Germany. From 2000 to 2009, Dr. Norbert Verweyen worked for RWE Supply & Trading GmbH, formerly known as RWE Trading GmbH, in various managerial positions, the last of which was Head of Market Design. From 1998 he worked in Corporate Development at VEW AG in Dortmund, which merged in 2000 with RWE AG. Between 1990 and 1997 he was employed at VEBA AG in different positions in the Corporate Development and Economic Policy departments. After studying mechanical engineering at the renowned RWTH University in Aachen, Dr. Norbert Verweyen worked there from 1987 as a Senior Engineer in the Department of Heat Transfer and Air Conditioning. He also studied Business Administration at the Open University in Hagen.

    • Hans started his professional career in Philips Research in 1985 before taking on general and development management positions. He established a leading broadband data communications company The Industree BV in 1998, which was acquired by BarcoNet NV in 2000. Hans became Vice President of Barconet NV (now part of Scientific Atlanta, Inc. / Cisco Inc.) before re-joining Philips in 2002 as CEO of the Digital Networks Division. Hans became Vice President and General Manager of the Emerging Businesses unit at NXP Semiconductors, from which he spun-out software-GPS company Geotate ltd which he lead as CEO until acquisition by U-blox AG. End 2009 he joined Epyon as CEO which he managed through a growth phase including two financing rounds until the acquisition of Epyon by Switzerland based ABB. Hans holds a number of non-executive director positions and advisory positions with startup companies and has degrees in both Automotive and Electrical Engineering (hon’s) as well as Business Administration (hon’s). Hans is married to his first-love-for-ever Wendy and has four bright kids.

She made more than 50 acquisitions and divestments, including IPOs and significantly increased the market valuation of the company. In November 2011, Fabienne Herlaut leaves SNCF to create Eclaircile Gestion, in charge of managing Ecomobilité Ventures, the newly created €30M multi corporate (SNCF, PSA, Orange, Total) venture fund, dedicated to sustainable mobility. The company had engineering centers in the US and Europe, 2 manufacturing sites in the US, and a manufacturing site in China and in the UK. Previously, Mr. Le Séguillon was Vice President, Computer, Consumer, Communications, Automotive, Industrial and Appliance Business Units of Parlex. Prior to working in China, Mr. Le Séguillon worked in Boston, MA, for Parlex Corporation (NASDAQ: PRLX) as Vice President of the Multilayer and Cable Business. Earlier in his career, Thibaud advanced in product engineering, sales engineering, and product marketing management roles to the position of General Manager at Axon’ Cable Inc., a subsidiary of Axon’ Cable SA, based in Chicago, IL. Since June 2003, Hanne is Editor-in-chief of “neue energie” and “new energy”. Prior to that, she was a trainee and editor for an architecture and building magazine (1992 – 1999) and writer and vice managing editor for a weekly financial magazine (2000 – 2003). Hanne May is co-author of the book “Grünes Geld” (green investments) (2003 and 2005) and well-known through her articles, lectures and moderations in various publications and (inter)national events. Moreover, Hanne is advisory committee and advisory board member in several entities and founding member and committee member of Women of Wind Energy Germany.
