Sonnenbatterie raises €7.5M Series B from Munich Venture Partners, Chrysalix SET and Ecapital
Sonnenbatterie raises €7.5M in their Series B financing round from the co-investors Munich Venture Partners, Chrysalix SET and Ecapital. The Bavarian startup sold over 4.000 smart energy storage systems and is one of the fastest growing smart green startups in Germany. We like Sonnenbatterie since their first pitch at Ecosummit Düsseldorf 2012. In January 2013, Ecapital invested €3M in the Series A. At ECO13 Berlin, Sonnenbatterie won Ecosummit Award 2013 Bronze and Philipp Schröder, now at Tesla, performed a great pitch. Sonnenbatterie also joined our first Ecosummit London 2013. In March 2014, we co-hosted our first Ecosummit Advisor Workshop in the energy village Wildpoldsried. Among our advisors were Martin Kröner (MVP) and Rene Savelsberg (Chrysalix SET) and, as you can see, they went home more impressed than ever before. At ECO14 Berlin, Sonnenbatterie won Ecosummit Award 2014 Gold and Benjamin Schott jumped on stage. At ECO14 London, Christoph Ostermann pitched again after we enjoyed an incredible sponsor dinner at Home House and then got lost in London’s taxi underground. Now it is time to celebrate before doubling annual production and revenues in the years to come. Long live Sonnenbatterie and very big the exit shall be.

Ecosummit TV: Mads Jensen pitches Sefaira at ECO13 London. Buildings are complex systems which integrate many interdependent smart green technologies including building materials, orientation, air ventilation, glazing, insulation, shading, heating, cooling and lighting. To optimise this system Sefaira makes software for high performance building design and enables architects to analyse their designs until they are perfect in terms of energy footprint and cost of operations. Founded in 2009, the UK-US startup launched in 2012 and convinced over 200 architecture firms to use the software in their building design process. Sefaira raised €13M ($18M) from Chrysalix SET, Braemar Energy Ventures and Hermes GPE and won the Ecosummit Award 2013 Gold medal. We like the way Sefaira fosters smart green cities and are happy that Mads joined our Ecosummit Advisors.

Ecosummit TV: Christoph Ostermann pitches Sonnenbatterie at ECO13 London. The solar battery integrates energy storage with residential PV systems. The intelligent storage solution has got a built-in smart meter that enables the management of local energy production and consumption. By using a mobile app the houseowner decides whether to feed-in or directly consume the homemade electricity. Sonnenbatterie is backed by eCapital and their sales curve looks beautiful. Founded in 2010, Sonnenbatterie launched in 2011 and enjoys €11M revenues in 2013. At ECO13 Berlin, Sonnenbatterie won the Ecosummit Award Jury Bronze medal in recognition of their outstanding business potential. In our opinion, Christoph and his team of Bavarian grid parity surfers are one of the hottest cleantech startups in Germany.

Ecosummit TV: Leopold von Bismarck pitches Tado at ECO13 Berlin. The Munich-based startup provides a smart green heating management service that helps consumers save up to €300 per year. At €99 annual subscription fee, this is a fair deal that makes economic and ecological sense. Customers connect a small hardware box to their central heating system and control it with a smartphone app. Backed by Target Partners and Shortcut Ventures, Tado is one of the most promising cleantech startups in Germany. At the same time, they are a very good case study to learn how cleantech and Internet grow together by making things smart and connecting them to their users. Thus your heating system goes green by operating less, only when it is really needed. The expert jury of the Ecosummit Award 2013 also thought that Tado is on a roll and sent them home with a silver medal and some useful prize money.

Ecosummit TV: Konstantin Artemyev pitches Bravo Motors from Russia at ECO13 Berlin. Konstantin is 27 years old, founded and still owns an IT security startup and comes from Astrakhan near the Caspian Sea. In 2011, he founded his second startup Bravo Motors which is very similar to Hiriko as they also develop a foldable electric city vehicle. However, Konstantin and his talented team built the first prototype with just $200K, a fantastic achievement and proof of their engineering genius. Now Bravo Motors wants to raise $4M to further develop the eTrike and start series production. Bravo Motors just won the Skolkovo Startup Village competition as well as the Ecosummit Award 2013 Facebook Silver medal. We believe Bravo Motors is one of the most promising cleantech startups in Russia.

Ecosummit TV: Josefine Ahl pitches Oricane from Sweden at ECO13 Berlin. The smart green startup provides green software for big data applications that saves a lot of hardware and energy. Their product BioCAM is an energy efficient NoSQL database with very low CPU and memory footprint. Oricane is backed by Finnish VC Cleantech Invest. Josefine is so confident of the benefits of Oricane’s software that she proposes a new software licensing model which is not based on CPUs but rather on the service level itself. At ECO13 Berlin, Oricane won Ecosummit Award 2013 Facebook Bronze and, the next day, Josefine demonstrated that she rules the art of startup pitching, too.
