Elevator Pitch

Entelios is Germany’s first Demand Response Aggregator, pooling electrical loads of commercial and industrial energy users. Entelios builds and operates a virtual power system. This way, Entelios markets the aggregated flexibility of power users’ loads to grid operators and utilities and reacts to price signals on the power exchange. Demand Response is one of the main levers needed to execute on the German energy turnaround (Energiewende), as it is the cheapest, fastest and greenest alternative, e.g. even in comparison with pump hydro storage systems. Entelios was founded 2010 and has begun to accumulate “megawatts under management” in cooperation with a large German utility. Our objective is to control 150 MW of industrial loads at the end of 2012. The founders and management team are serial entrepreneurs with deep experience in software and Internet, energy and telecommunication markets. They transfer a proven business model from the U.S. to Germany, while adapting it to the local environment. In Germany, about 9 GW of flexibility is immediately waiting to be utilized by industrial and commercial energy users. While building a sophisticated real-time Network Operations Center (NOC) using state-of-the art technology, Entelios is working with all relevant players in the regulated energy market: the regulatory agency (BNetzA), the transmission system operators, distribution system operators, large utilities and industrial energy users.

Smart Green Product

The Entelios Industrial Demand Response Program is a paradigm shift in the way a power grid is operated. The conventional system is streamlined in delivering just the exact amount of energy from generators to end users, according to “production follows consumption”. Since more and more fluctuating renewable energy from decentral wind and PV plants is fed into the system, grid stability and reliability are in danger. The new paradigm “consumption follows production” adapts power usage by industrial and commercial users according to the actual power generation and the overall grid status. The German energy turnaround is based on the rapid expansion of renewable energy production and the phasing-out of nuclear plants until 2022. It is consensus in politics and industry that 5 solutions must be implemented quickly in order to deal with the rapid change of the German power sector: (1) energy efficiency, (2) flexible generation, (3) grid expansion, (4) storage and (5) demand side technologies. Demand side technologies are the fastest to build, most capital efficient and “greenest” alternative: the others require long planning cycles, high capital investment, difficult permitting processes and many of them will produce CO2. Entelios is a leader in enabling large industrial power users to market their flexibility in the German power markets. The Entelios Network Operations Center monitors and controls a large swarm of industrial loads according to the grid status and market conditions.
